QUICK LINKS

Introduction

MCIA's Foundation Seed Department is the agent of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in producing and distributing Foundation seed of crop varieties developed by publicly financed research agencies.

MCIA cooperates closely with the University of Minnesota plant breeders in maintaining a continuing supply of pure seed of public varieties used in Minnesota agriculture. The Foundation seed produced and distributed by MCIA is the source for producing Registered and Certified seed in the state.

The Minnesota plan of seed distribution for new varieties was developed to facilitate distribution of limited seedstocks as equitably as possible. It gives eligible growers an opportunity to participate in producing seed of the variety as soon as possible after it is released.

MCIA's Foundation Seed Department also provides private seedstock increase services on a contractual basis. Production services are available for a number of crops of specialty or commercial varieties. Pricing structures are determined by increase size and production requirements.

New service implementation and evaluation are on-going. MCIA's Foundation Seed Department welcomes the opportunity to work on customized projects with interested parties.
