Crop Variety Review Committee

New variety release policies and procedures are developed by the University of Minnesota's Crop Variety Review Committee (CVRC). Members of this committee include the head of the Agronomy and Plant Genetics department, plant breeders, extension agronomists, plant pathologists, experiment station personnel, the MCIA President/CEO and the MCIA Manager of Foundation Seed Services.

The committee is responsible for:

  • Approving the release of new varieties and plant genetics,
  • Approving increases and procedures for increasing and releasing new varieties and plant genetics,
  • Determining the release date and the amount of seed distributed,
  • Determining the names of new varieties,
  • Revising the list of recommended varieties on an annual basis, and
  • Suggesting policy related to release and recommendation procedures.
