Crop Variety Review Committee

New variety release policies and procedures are developed by the University of Minnesota's Crop Variety Review Committee (CVRC). Members of this committee are appointed by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station Director and include the head of the Agronomy and Plant Genetics department, plant breeders, extension agronomists, plant pathologists, experiment station personnel, the MCIA President/CEO and the MCIA Manager of Foundation Seed Services.

The committee is responsible for:

  1. Approving the release of new varieties, hybrids, inbreds, clones and special genetic stocks.
  2. Approving increases and procedures for increasing and releasing plant stocks of new varieties, hybrids, inbreds and clones developed by the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station.
  3. Provide input on the names of new varieties, hybrids, inbreds, or clones developed by the Experiment Station.
  4. Recommend policies relating to release and recommendation procedures.
