New variety distribution and allotment

Seed distribution and allotment are determined by a group within the Crop Variety Review Committee headed by MCIA's Manager of Foundation Seed Services. This group allocates seed of new varieties to organizations and counties and establishes general policies of distribution. 75% of seed of new varieties is allocated through county seed distribution committees and 25% is allocated to the Minnesota Approved Seed Conditioners and Marketing Association (MASCMA).

The amount of seed allotted to each county is determined on the basis of previous certified seed production of the crop in the county. Information on new varieties, the amount of seed available and other variety release information is distributed by the Foundation seed program. Nominations for allotments to members of MASCMA are made by the Board of Directors of that Association and allotments at the county level are made by a county seed distribution committee.

Variety Information Brochures

MCIA members can access informational brochures and fact sheets for many popular varieties of wheat, oats, barley and soybeans. The brochures, prepared by the University of Minnesota faculty, are available on the MN Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) web page: (www.maes.umn.edu).

Click on "Varietal Trials of Selected Minnesota Crops" then scroll down to MAES Variety Trial Crops Resource page links, click on the crop, scroll down to the bottom of the page which will list "Other (Crop) Resources;" the various brochures and fact sheets available are listed there in PDF format. These fact sheets can be printed from the web site for use by MCIA members. Additional varieties will be added in the future.
