Foundation Seed

QUICK LINKS

Buying seed from other states and Canada

Minnesota seed growers are reminded that if they wish to purchase Foundation seed of public varieties from other states, they should contact Minnesota Crop Improvement Association's Foundation Seed Department.

All Foundation seed organizations in the United States operate under the understanding that if they are contacted by growers wishing to purchase Foundation seed, they will refer the grower to the Foundation seed organization that serves the state in which they are located. If that state's Foundation seed organization does not have the seed, they will purchase the seed from another state and make it available to the grower. The purchase should always be made by the Foundation seed organization of the state in which the seed grower is located. MCIA members are not eligible to purchase Foundation seed directly from other states.

Seed growers from other states who contact the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association are referred back to their respective Foundation seed organization. In Minnesota, the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association Board of Directors has a long-standing policy that production from Foundation seed purchased directly from other states can only be classified as Certified seed.

Seed from Canada

Members are eligible to import Foundation or Registered seed of Canadian varieties not produced by MCIA. Many Canadian varieties have royalties and levies. A license agreement must be completed before seed can be imported. The SeCan organization of Canada provides MCIA with a list of eligible varieties on an annual basis. Levy and royalty rates are included with this list.

If members wish to purchase Registered or Foundation seed of SeCan varieties, the following procedures are suggested:

1. MCIA member locates a source of seed from a SeCan member.

2. SeCan member applies for permission to make the sale.

3. MCIA member applies to MCIA for permission to purchase seed. Member must sign an agreement before permission will be granted.

4. MCIA notifies SeCan of approval for grower to purchase seed.
